Can I ask you to read that last line again, keeping in mind it was penned by the former ambassador from the country he is discussing, not some foreign journalist? Islamists will continue to flourish while the state continues to weaken – there is that tribalism again. We should all keep an eagle eye on the political and military developments in this crucial country. We can become obsessed with preventing a nuclear Iran, but a nuclear-Islamist Pakistan could be a larger and more real threat in the next few years. It might not take a violent coup to wrest the briefcase with nuclear codes from a secular government. It could happen quite peaceably at the ballot box or as a result of a routine promotion within the military.

Outside of the political machinations in Pakistan lie other routes for 120 to 130 nuclear warheads to end up in Islamist hands. In many of the emerging democracies in the world, when push comes to shove, the military still rules the country. The same is true in Pakistan, which is why nuclear scientists there worry about an internal transfer of nuclear authorization to high-ranking Islamist officers, either in public or in secret.

A recent book entitled Confronting the Bomb: Pakistani and Indian Scientists Speak Out would probably make your hair curl if you read all of its essays. Pakistani scientists, it turns out, are quite worried about the growing Islamist influence in the military. Nuclear physicist and defense analyst Pervez Hoodbhoy, the book’s editor, summarized the nervousness this way:
